First Semester Vocab

  • systematic
Having, using, or involving a system, method, or plan for a process or problem. A systematic approach to studying might include a planner, highlighters, and a binder for each class. Someone solving a problem in a systematic way might write things out step-by-step to find a solution.
  • synthesize
To form or make something by combining parts or elements:
-synthesize information from several different sources to get a clear understanding
-you synthesize many ingredients as you follow a recipe
  • lifestyle
A typical way in which someone chooses to live.
(example) Running and physical fitness is a big part of her lifestyle.

  • esteem
The worth or value of something (noun).  To admire or value something (verb).
(example) Megan holds her older brother in high esteem and wants to be just like him.
  • essential
  • extremely important and necessary
  • evaluate
  • to judge the value or condition of (someone or something) in a careful and thoughtful way
  • occupation
an activity in which one engages, the principal business of one's life
  • attributes
an inherent characteristic; also :  an accidental quality
Example: The interviewer asked me what I consider to be my best attribute.
  • work environment
Physical, social, mental, and psychological factors that affect where you work every day.   
Example:  The work environment at Google is designed to help employees stay healthy, happy, and creative, which in turn benefits the company as a whole.  

  • compatible
able to exist, fit, or work together without trouble or conflict.
Example: When teachers assign groups, the students are not always compatible and sometimes work gets divided unfairly.  
·         volunteer
·         to perform a service for others without being paid for it
·         Example: Cory said she would like to volunteer at the animal shelter to help take care of pets who need a good home.
  • persistence
Very steady and determined existence of something even though it may encounter challenges or opposition.
“The weeds in my front yard show extreme persistence in growing, although I spray them constantly with poison.”
  • conscious
Having knowledge and awareness of something.
“Maria is conscious of the fact that her teacher hates it if students are late.”
  • motivation
the condition of being eager to act or work; a force or influence that causes someone to do something
  • Making my mom proud is my motivation for working hard every day.

  • objective
Something you are trying to do or achieve : a goal or purpose
The main/primary objective of the class is to teach basic typing skills

·         obstacle
·         something that makes it difficult to do something or blocks your path
·         example: “Cris would have to find a way to pay for college tuition, instead of letting money be an obstacle to his getting an education.”
